Photodynamic Therapy, PDT, is a special treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing substrate activated by a light source like IPL and LED skin Therapy. These treatments remove sun damaged pre-cancerous zones and spots (actinic keratosis) Sun damage, fine lines and blotchy pigmentation are also improved because of the positive effect of light and substrate treatment. PDT is also unique for its ability to minimize pores and reduce oil glands, effectively treating acne vulgaris, acne rosacea and improve scarring from past acne.
PDT utilizes a substrate called Aminolevulinic Acid, also known as ALA, and a light source. ALA is applied topically (directly on the skin). The solution is applied directly to the target lesions. A light or laser source is then used to activate the ALA and the targeted cells are destroyed.
Patients with sun damage skin manifested by actinic keratosis, texture and tone changes like pigmentation and skin laxity are recommended to have series of three treatment 2-4 weeks apart. Patients will also see an improvement in large pores and pitted acne scars. However, some patients with actinic keratosis are happy with just one treatment.
Beneath the surface of the skin lie hundreds of tiny glands called sebaceous glands. Their function is to collect and excrete the oily substance called sebum, thus keeping the skin healthy. In acne cases this tiny pathway becomes clogged, and a bacterium called p.acnes grows inside. In a short time, the area swells up, and forms a pimple on the skin.
While there are many treatments for moderate acne, sometime moderate acne does not respond to treatment with creams, washes and medications. Using a light source like LED Skin Therapy, in conjunction with ALA can kill the p.acnes bacteria in the skin. Treatments are simple as the patient lies under a light source for a short period of time with ALA on affected area. This treatment is not hot or uncomfortable and is very safe. After some weeks, the affected acne area will be more manageable and may clear up for a long period of time.
Following PDT the treated area can appear red with some peeling for two to seven days. In rare cases patients may experience marked redness on the skin, as well as temporary swelling around the eyes and lips. Darker liver spots may become temporarily darker, then peel off after a couple of days, leaving normal skin, usually over the 7-10 day period.
